Good composition
With today's automatic cameras, which focus for us and adjust the exposure in an evermore perfect way, the biggest difference between a good photograph and a poor one is the compositon effect.
We can decide where the boundaries of that photo will be, by cropping. We can also choose the viewpoint of the image. When taking pictures of people or movable objects then we also have the opportunity to arrange them into the shapes we desire.
When shooting landscapes or other immovable objects then compose the picture by moving yourself and deciding where to place the point of interest in your image.
Various compositional rules exist ie guidelines to help you out. Rules will help you to compose pleasing pictures (sometimes you will find that a really striking picture shows a blatant disregard for the rules and advice. If you are aware of the rules then you may break them as often as you want but, at least you know you are breaking them and why you are doing so.
The Rule of Thirds - landscape photographers are particularly fond of this one, but it works well for many types of subject matter. This rule of thirds simply says that, instead of placing the main focus of interest in the centre of the frame (which can get a little boring), that look to position it on an intersection of the thirds in the image. Meaning one third up and one third in or two thirds up and one third in.
As an example, imagine a boat on a lake. Placing the boat near the top of the picture tells the viewer that what they are supposed to be looking at is the reflection of the boat. By taking the boat out altogether, of course, this would focus our attention even more on the reflection but the picture might then be a little too minimalist in style.
The boat's mast needs to beon the 'third' line as well. By leaving a little space to the right of the boat helps to give the impression that, although the boat is not moving, it has somewhere to go to.
This is a nice illustration of composing 'on the thirds', but very light corners coupled with for example stripes in the waves of water may lead the viewer's eye out of the picture which may be distracting.
Using Diagonals - setting your subject matter on a diagonal will almost always make for a more dynamic image. This may be an invisible diagonal that draws your eye between two points of view. Try moving around the subject and look for a diagonal to place in the image.
